Peering Even Deeper Into the Future

Keeping with what has turned into the theme for today, let's jump ahead two years to the fall of 2011 and take a look at the Bulldogs roster. Obviously it's impossible right now to know what the freshmen class might look like, but this exercise should give us a good idea of where Georgia needs to focus when recruiting the current high school juniors.

OFFENSE
QB: Aaron Murray (Logan Gray/Zach Mettenberger)
RB: Richard Samuel (Caleb King/Washaun Ealey/Ken Malcolme)
FB: Josh Sailors
WR: Marlon Brown (Rantavious Wooten)
WR: Tavarres King* (Da'Rick Rogers, Israel Troupe)
TE: Orson Charles (Aron White/Arthur Lynch)
C: Ben Jones (D. Lee)
T: Justin Anderson, T. Sturdivant# (B.Benedict)
G: A.J. Harmon, Cordy Glenn (T. Strickland/C. Burnette)

(* assuming A.J. Green leaves for the NFL, # assuming Sturdivant comes back from ACL surgery and plays through his senior season.)

DEFENSE
DE: Justin Houston, C. Washington (M. Robinson/J. Fields/D. Morant/T.J. Stripling)
DT: Abry Jones, D. Tyson (K. Geathers/D. Lott/G. Smith)
WLB: M. Gilliard (C. Robinson)
MLB: M. Dowtin (C. Vasser)
SLB: N. Williams (C. White)
S: J. Hamilton/S. Commings (B. Rambo/M. Pugh/A. Ogletree/S. Williams)
CB: B. Smith/B. Boykin (N. Robey/J. Love)

Some thoughts...

-- Depth on the offensive line could be an issue. Georgia had three commitments in 2009, but Austin Long missed the year with a back injury and Dallas Lee hasn't been particularly quick to develop. In 2010, the Bulldogs have just two more commitments. If the Bulldogs run into a injury issues the way they did a year ago, they could be in trouble.

-- Rebuilding the depth at wide receiver will continue to be an issue, particularly if A.J. Green chooses to leave after his junior season. Georgia has two WR commits for 2010, Da'Rick Rogers and Michael Bennett, but should Green leave and with the departures of Mike Moore after this season and Kris Durham after next, that would leave Georgia with just six scholarship wideouts pending the 2011 signing class. They probably need to add at least two and maybe three in that group.

-- Recruiting fullbacks isn't always seen as a big issue, but the position has been a cornerstone of Georgia's offense for years and there's not much depth there once Shaun Chapas and Fred Munzenmaier -- both juniors this year -- depart.

-- It's amazing how quickly that lack of defensive end depth might change. Georgia will actually be quite deep there in two years. Safety looks to be exceptionally strong as well. The depth that Georgia has at linebacker this year, however, will disappear quickly in two seasons.

So looking ahead two years, fullback, wideout, offensive tackle and linebacker (and possibly corner) appear to be the positions of greatest need, while the defensive line and safety are particularly strong.

Looking at that lineup, what jumps out to you? Does anything have you particularly worried? Should the Bulldogs be going the JuCo route anywhere?

RB, OL and WR

OL and DT depth always worry me.

I also think you are underestimating Bacarri Rambo. I think he would start over Commings by that time.

Remember that this class isn't complete yet as well. We may add a LB and OT in this class still. We should definitely be trying to pick up a big WR and RB in next year's class though, and even if we do add those other guys, we still should pick up a LB and OL or 3. Corner will likely be a position of need by then too, good call.

DT is the biggest need I think you didn't mention, though. We need either one more in this class (Thornton) or a few in next years...
