For those of you still holding out hope that Kirby Smart will be the next Georgia defensive coordinator, it might be time to let go.
Gentry Estes of the Mobile Press-Register has some interesting quotes from Smart on his blog today that seem to support the general consensus that Smart and Georgia ain't happening.
"It's been great," Smart said. "It's been great having these players and doing this, and I'm looking forward to it next year. I mean, we've got a lot of good players coming back."
And as for moving on, Smart said he might be interested in a head coaching job, but even that wasn't something he's in a rush to attain.
"If a better opportunity presents itself, then obviously that's something down the road. But young as I am, I'm happy to be where I'm at and happy to be at University of Alabama."
What I've been hearing all along is that there was never much mutual interest from Smart or Georgia beyond some basic discussions (and possibly a little lobbying by Smart's good friend, Mike Bobo). So is there still a possibility that Smart returns to Georgia as the DC? I suppose, but at this point, it's a long shot at best.

I don't think Smart is the right option. We'd end up paying too much for him and as said by someone other than me: If he does well, he is gone in a year or two at best for a HC job. If he does poorly, we paid too much for the wrong guy. I say go with someone who is not going to be looking for a head coaching job in the near future. A proven old guy or a young buck with something to prove. My two cents....
By the way, David Hale, you do excellent work. Thanks for all the informative and creative work. And your sense of humor is down right delightful. OK, I'll quit with the man crush....

My sympathies for having your fball hopes rely upon Reid.
His recent quotes to me do nothing to say he is definitely not coming to Athens. He is saying exactly what he should say the week before coaching the biggest game of his career. I certainly don't think he can go wrong either way, especially if the Tide win the title. He will have won a title as DC at Bama, working for a guy like Saban who still gets credit for every defense he coaches, whether he is the head coach or DC. At UGA, Richt turns the D over to his DC completely and in this case, the DC will get say into what assistant coaches he can hire. Money will be there as will be the ability to be closer to both sets of grandparents and be helping to turn around his alma mater's defense.
To say you don't want him because he will just leave in two years, I don't buy that. There is no guarantees for any coach you hire. I say get the best candidate you can and worry about him leaving later. Heck, the rumor with Chavis was a 3 year deal, I am quite sure we can offer the same to Kirby.
I can see it going either way but until he signs an extension at Bama, I still think he is a top candidate here.

Article in Austin today notes long relationship Muschamp has in getting Kirby jobs. Won't be surprised to see them both in Austin if Mack steps aside in 2 - 3 years.
why would smart take a step DOWN to coach at uga when he can win national titles at texas?
