Cox Plays Role of Mentor

If there was any debate before this spring, offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said Joe Cox has put to rest the possibility that he wouldn't be Georgia's starting quarterback in 2009.

"He not only wants to be the starter, but he wants to be the leader of this football team," Bobo said. "He's trying to lead these guys and make sure we're doing things the right way."

Cox admits he doesn't have the arm his predecessor possessed, but that's not his game. His game is all about leadership, and it's something he has been developing since he arrived at Georgia.

"That's one of the main reasons we recruited Joe Cox was that intangible leadership he showed in high school," Bobo said. "He is productive when he's in there, they've seen him be productive in practice, and he's been productive this spring."

Cox has taken the younger quarterbacks under his wing this spring, and while he's spent hours and hours teaching his understudies, Bobo has also been pleased with the example Cox has set on the field.

"Joe's a perfect example," Bobo said. "I'm always telling them to listen to what I'm saying, but I'm also telling them to watch Joe Cox on every throw because he knows how to do it."

All this "Joe is a great leader" stuff is starting to make me nervous. Its like saying over and over a girl is kinda short and has a great personality.

I fully realize how having a great leader in the huddle could be something we lacked last year. But, every time you say it again and again is one more time you aren't saying he makes good reads and throws good balls.

Its almost like I'm hearing Joe's a great influence on our freshmen, and because of him, one day we'll have a good quarterback.

I can agree. I'd really like to hear jcox is lighting it up on the field. Leadership is great, especially at qb...but so is accurate throws to the correct receiver.

Joe T. was a great leader.

Joe Cox can throw the ball and lead.

He may not sazzle us, but I bet we cut down on the turnovers.

Re. concerns about Joe C.'s passing:

Others are saying what I am thinking

I am glad we are hearing this but we heard about how great a leader Joe TIII was.

Joe Cox is not Shockley. Nowhere near close, imo, nor does he have the game time that DJ had.
