From UGA Athletics...
University of Georgia tailback Knowshon Moreno and the UGA gymnastics team captured two of the top awards Monday night at the 2009 Atlanta Sports Awards at the Fox Theater in downtown Atlanta.
Sponsored by the Atlanta Sports Council and presented by Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar, the Atlanta Sports Awards honors the most accomplished athletes and teams at all levels throughout the metro Atlanta community.
Moreno earned All-America honors in 2008 helping the Bulldogs to a 10-3 overall record and Capital One Bowl victory over Michigan State. The Gym Dogs won their fourth national championship in a row in 2008 and 9th overall under the leadership of head coach Suzanne Yoculan. Yoculan, associate head coach Jay Clark and gymnasts Tiffany Tolnay and Abby Stack accepted the award.
Other top award winners included Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith as coach of the year and Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan as pro athlete of the year.
Former Georgia swimmer and 2008 Olympian Kara Lynn Joyce was a finalist for the Amateur Athlete of the Year award.
