UGA Golf Win Brickyard

The Brickyard Collegiate Championship trophy is staying in Athens.

The sixth-ranked Georgia men's golf team won the Brickyard on Monday by five strokes, giving the Bulldogs the title in both years of the tournament's existence.

Georgia finished at 19-over-par 859, including a final-round, 2-over 282. The Bulldogs defeated instate rival Georgia Tech by five shots. Following Saturday's first round, Georgia was 10 shots behind the Yellow Jackets.

"I am very proud of our players," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "We didn't start off very well, but our guys refused to pack it in. This was a real team effort. The last two days, all of the players were focused on what they needed to do to make us successful. That's how you win college golf tournaments."

Junior Hudson Swafford paced the Bulldogs on Monday as he carded a 2-under 68. Sophomore Harris English and freshman Patrick Reed each added an even-par 70, sophomore Russell Henley signed for a 4-over 74 and senior Brian Harman had the Bulldogs' non-counting score of 5-over 75.

Swafford and 2007 Brickyard medalist English finished tied for third at 5-over 215, four shots behind Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech. Macon native Henley came in ninth at 6-over 216, Reed finished 21st at 9-over 219 and Harman placed 28th at 10-over 220. Playing as an individual and making his Georgia debut, freshman Will Kropp came in 36th at 12-over 222, including a 1-over 71 on Monday.

The Bulldogs will wrap up the fall portion of their schedule Oct. 26-28 at the Isleworth Invitational in Windermere, Fla. Georgia has won the Isleworth three of the last four years.
