Uniform note

I meant to post this earlier in the week, then all the Greg McGarity stuff overtook it. Anyway, had a question from a poster about uniforms. I quote:

Can you find out if the Dawgs will wear the 'real' silver britches this year instead of the flat gray ones worn last year? I know Damon Evans expected silver this year but now he is gone?

The answer, bluntly, is no change. Here was the answer from the inimitable Claude Felton at Georgia:

We will be wearing the same pants as last season. Nike has a newer lighter material called cordura that the players all wanted. They feel the new pants are lighter and more comfortable than the old pants but on these it ‘s a little more difficult to replicate the same silver “sheen.”

So there you go.

Shameless plug: My story in Sunday morning's papers on the Ogletree brothers.

Blog side note:
I encountered a snake this afternoon, walking the dog down at the river. Now here's my problem: I was always taught by elders that snakes were as afraid of us as we are of them. And typically they've held up their end of the bargain, slithering away when we get within, say, 10 feet of them.

But this bugger didn't jump into the river until I was right up on it, giving me a good look at its light brown skin (but not the head, so I couldn't be sure whether it was a poisonous copperhead, just a water moccasin, or what.)

Bottom line, if any of you out there know any snakes, let them know that they're supposed to run away from us before we see them and get spooked. They're supposed to be able to sense us from far away.

Blog side note 2: I forgot to start Jair Jurrjens in my fantasy baseball league today. ... Whoops.

Ryan - I was about to say the same thing. Careful with the "just a water moccasin." They're nasty. I remember my dad "removing" (courtesy of a 12ga mag) them from our pond growing up, some as big as your forearm and they always appeared aggressive.

Anyway - enjoy the river banks!

On camping trip we would find water moccasins almost every time we went. so we just killed them and ate them. They are so big and have a lot of meat. Pretty good.

Aren't water moccasin's the same species as a cottonmouth? Which I thought were also one of the poisonous snakes in ga (with coral, copperheads, and eastern diamond back rattlesnakes).

Welcome to Georgia. Cottonmouth water moccasins are the only poisonous water snake we have here among the dozens of brown and speckled/ringed water snake species with long bodies tapering to a tail. Cottonmouths have a thick body that abruptly ends in a narrow short tale and are dark leaning towards black....They are related to rattlesnakes and copperheads in that they are pit vipers. Hmmm eating one? Anyone who has had survivalist training would probably pass if possible. The meat has a rancid smell and is loaded with parasites. Killing a moc in one's personal pond out of fear is less objectionable than killing one in a river. Walking a river with a lab...I'd say the ruckus he would raise in barking and such would be more than adequate to run it into the river. I had an airedale (Duke) while at UGA that got bit. Great dog ....just not as smart as most labs.
As for the pants.....any color but "red" please. I have my reasons.
just sayin'

Thanks for the helpful words on the snakes. I didn't get a good look at it, but it did look light brown-ish, and with a somewhat thick body. Of course the mind can play tricks on you.

What's frustrating is now I'll be reluctant to take the dog down to this spot on the river. I'll probably still go, but I'll be looking left and right for slithering critters the whole time, wondering if this'll be the last time I ever walk the earth.

But ... eh.

It's all good. When you take you lab into the woods/river ....well your bound to encounter wildlife. Fall is on the way and soon snakes will be on their way to cozy up somewhere and get ready for winter. Can't imagine not letting you dog enjoy your river. I had a buddy that was into labs and they stayed wet! Good exercise. Next to a Staffordshire Terrier...I'd certainly consider a lab as they are a lot of fun when you get them outside. Well mannered too.

Wait, I thought we weren't supposed to care about uniform gimmicks . . .

Do us a big favor and make all your links open a new window rather than navigating you away from your page. It makes it so much easier to stop and read a story and then come back to your site.
