Georgia gets a good hoops win

The good times on the football recruiting trail carried over to Georgia's men's basketball team on Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs won at Arkansas, 60-59, as Trey Thompkins hit a free throw with 1.4 seconds left.

Thompkins was sent to the foul line after a foul was called as he rebounded his own miss. Arkansas wanted a traveling call. But Thompkins got the call and nailed the first free throw, then missed the second, but the Razorbacks didn't get a shot off before the buzzer.

(This is all according to sources close to my television set. Like pretty much all media members covering Georgia I was here in Athens covering signing day.)

It was a big win in several ways for Georgia, which improved to 15-6 overall and 4-4 in the SEC. The Bulldogs are now 2-2 on the road in SEC play, and 3-0 against the West.

The good news for Georgia is that it is now 4-4 at the halfway mark of SEC play, with games still to play against the league's two worst teams - Auburn and LSU - and two against what is probably the East's worst team, South Carolina. The bad news is it lost twice at home and still has to go Florida, Tennessee and Alabama.

Auburn is next up for Georgia, Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Stegeman Coliseum.

Huge win, especially since the first half was so poorly played. It was obvious the travel and the lack of a walkthrough/shootaround had a huge effect. Add in the 2 early fouls on Thompkins, and it was only great defense that kept us in the game.

It wasn't pretty, but we finally caught a late game break and won one of these close ones. Now we need to string a few wins together...

I agree, Steve! Let's go, Dawgs! Thanks, Seth. Beat the Awbarn!

We deserved a break more than any team in the country. Ugly game but a win is a win.

Price's minutes need to be cut significantly. Nolte or Thorton, I don't care which but the 2 seniors are terrible.

Have to admit, I was whooped and fell out at halftime, didn't think we had a chance after playing at pathetically as we did the 1st half. Arkansas is not good at all, but they were 12-0 at home coming into last night.

This was basically a must-win for the Dawgs. UF and UT are definitely winnable games, but 10-6is likely going to need to be the number to get into the tourney.

I agree on Price. Just cannot figure out why the guy cannot make a layup. It's almost like a mental block or something.
