Did Todd Grantham make a choke sign on a play involving a field goal attempt? If he did, he wouldn't be the first, or the most famous. (More on that later.)
As you may have seen by now, a screen-shot of Grantham appearing to make the choke sign is making the rounds on the web. The Georgia defensive coordinator seems to be yelling at the field as he grabs his neck; many are assuming that Grantham was telling Florida’s Chas Henry he was about to choke before he attempted a game-winning field goal in overtime.
(Henry made it, as you doubtless already know.)
Pat Dooley of the Gainesville Sun tweeted the following this evening: "Just checked the CBS broadcast again. Todd Grantham grabs his neck and says "You're gonna bleepin' choke. You're gonna choke" to Henry.” The Associated Press has also picked up the story and sent it over the wires.
We didn’t get a chance to talk to Grantham or head coach Mark Richt about it. They’re not usually available on Mondays. Grantham usually speaks on Tuesdays.
Until we have definite proof, I’ll hold off on debating the merits of such an action.
But if true, it wouldn’t be the first time a defensive coordinator has done something like this.
In 1993, an up-and-coming NFL defensive coordinator was criticized for making a choke sign after a Miami Dolphins kicker missed a critical kick. The move was called a “breach of etiquette” by The New York Times.
The name of that young assistant who made the choke sign? Pete Carroll.
Grantham spent the past 11 years in the NFL, so maybe it's just a pro thing. If it's what he meant to do. We'll let you know as soon as he or his team responds to all this.

All choked up

Who really cares? Florida won. Again. That is the story. Do the Gators need a hug, too? Football is a physical sport where your opponent is trying to physically dominate you. In contrast to a hit to the sternum, I am sure the Florida kicker was emotionally traumatized when one of our coaches (and half the crowd) was screaming and yelling in his direction with the faint hope that he would miss the gimme FG. Someone should tell Mr. Dooley that Florida won with a guy charged with a felony just a month ago. No moral outrage over that? That in a nutshell is why I hate everything about Florida.
Umm, Rainey was originally charged with a 3rd-degree felony, but the state attorney later lowered the charge to a misdemeanor, so he is not a felon. Hasn't the UGA team had something like 10 arrests in the past year? Why doesn't anyone talk about that?
Because anyone 'charged' with a felony for UGA was immediately kicked off the team. Whether Chris 'time to die B#$#%' Rainey was convicted of the felony or not, he was charged with a felony crime, which he admitted to. Wonder how much it cost Corch to have that felony reduced to a misdemeanor? At GA you forget to pay a speeding ticket and you get suspended, at Florida you can threaten to kill people and get a slap on the wrist. Go Gaytah!
Florida has had more arrests over the years if you want to play that game. Rainey threatened someone, that's a little different than missing a court date for a traffic ticket. If he is a 3rd string player the is kicked off the team. Florida won and that's all that matters. Take the win and stop complaining that Florida should be felt sorry for, they don't deserve that.
WHO CARES. this is the dumbest thing i've ever seen argued about in a national newspaper.
I say...good for Grantham. Man, I like this guy. It's about time we see some visible competitiveness out of the coaching staff.
Seth, in no way am I trying to take a pot shot by asking such a candid question...But why is it that this blog consists of what appears to be third generation news that gets recycled throughout the media (especially the ajc, which I hate but sometimes forced to read)? Or do I have it turned around?
I know you're working hard out there and I appreciate that. But I'm still trying to figure out the identity of this blog in the wake of Hale. How can we get something unique and insightful? Don't take that as an insult, maybe just a challenge. I just don't get that "must read what he/she said today" feeling anymore (or from any UGA media outlet for that matter).
Hale was not even a UGA fan...but he really immersed himself into the reporting and came up with some intellectual and creative stuff. I hope you can be that guy to fill the void with among the UGA media. Just don't follow the lead of those AJC idiots, especially Shultz or Bradley. They were ex-communicated from UGA fandom a long time ago.
Awesome! Let's play "Our criminals are better than YOUR criminals"! Didn't Tavaris Queen just come off a 2 game suspension to play vs UF--nice timing there as well? Nice hypocrisy their Dawg brains--just accept your annual whooping w/ class..
Grantham should only apologize after Meyers apolgoizes for taunting the Georgia fans with the Chomp as he left the field.
as far as I know Tavaris King was not suspended right before the Florida game. As for good reads, Tony Barnhart has a rational discussion on why Richt should stay as coach over at AJC.
Tavarres King suspended (for the 1st game of the season)for underage possession of alcohol is not equal to being charged with a felony.
Even though Rainey's charge was "pled" (ahem) down to aggravated rude texting or some BS.
That Dolphins kicker was Ray Finkel who went on to a successful career as a police woman...
I second your comments MauiDawg.
This blog is headed downhill.
Seth... pay no attention to these Homers and Kool Aid Drinkers. They cant accept the truth. Its funny how other UGA blogs there has been no commentary since the program has been on a downward trend. Some havent commented since the SC loss. You just keep up the good work ! Mark Richt needs to be called out !
