Hoops: Thompkins could be out awhile with ankle sprain

The Georgia men’s basketball team will begin its highly-expected season without its most high-profile player.

SEC preseason player of the year Trey Thompkins has a significant ankle sprain and is out at least a week and probably longer.

“It could be two weeks. It could be a month. It kind of depends on how he responds to the treatment,” Fox said. “So we basically have left it where we’re going to treat him as aggressively as we can and then re-evaluate him here in a week.”

Fox said the injury happened Saturday as Thompkins was chasing a loose ball. The Bulldogs were holding a closed scrimmage against Clemson.

Thompkins is definitely out for Thursday’s exhibition game against Augusta State. Fox called the chances "extremely slim" of Thompkins playing in next week’s season opener against Mississippi Valley State.

Georgia’s second game is against Colorado on Nov. 16, at Stegeman Coliseum. That’s followed by a trip to Saint Louis on Nov. 20 and the Old Spice Classic, a three-game tournament over Thanksgiving weekend. Notre Dame is Georgia’s first opponent in that event.

In the short term, the Bulldogs will look to the more experienced players to replace Thompkins. That means Jeremy Price and Chris Barnes will see more playing time. But Fox indicated the team could also go with smaller looks, such as 6-foot-7 freshman Marcus Thornton in the post.

Walk-on added

Fox also announced the addition of a walk-on: Austin Long, a 6-4 wing from Atlanta. Long was a starter for Greater Atlanta Christian School, which won the GHSA Class AA title in March.

Wow, I really hope this is us getting all the bad luck out of the way early. We have have pre-season POY for the first time in forever and he gets hurt before even tipping it off. Hopefully he will be back at least before the Old Spice tourney.

Seth, you have got to go. We thought that the David Hale curse was bad, but you have taken it to a whole nother level.

This is getting a little ridiculous.
