UGA Baseball Tops Poll

From UGA Athletics...

The Georgia baseball team, off to the best start in school history, is ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball poll released Monday for the first time since the 1990 national championship season.

North Carolina is second followed by LSU, Texas and Arizona State to round out the top five.

The Bulldogs (12-0) are coming off a three-game sweep of Quinnipiac and have also swept series against Arizona in Tucson, Youngstown State and Presbyterian in addition to a win over Wofford.

Georgia broke the 98-year old record for the best start in program.

David,
How much stock should be put in the Dawgs being undefeated against these teams? I don't follow college baseball anymore...but shouldn't we start undefeated against these teams? pardon my ingorance and thanks for helping 'edjumicate' me.

I think you are partially right, jferg, and that's a sentiment that Perno and Co. have repeated: It's early, and the wins haven't come against top competition. I was honestly extremely surprised that this was UGA's best start -- would have figured they'd have mopped the floor with weak opponents early in the year before, too.

Having said that, I don't think it's the record, but rather the way Georgia is winning these games that is impressive. The pitching has been solid and the offense has been unstoppable so far. They've topped 10 runs in nine of the 12 games, and they are hitting up and down the lineup.

To your point though... we'll know a lot more about just how good they are in a couple weeks.
