Mason will play. (If Murray gets hurt)

- There is now a plan for Hutson Mason. Sort of.

Georgia head coach Mark Richt said after Wednesday’s practice that Mason will play Saturday against Louisiana-Lafayette – if he’s needed.

Richt put it like this, and very carefully:

“God forbid something happens to our starting quarterback, Aaron Murray, Hutson would definitely play if he got hurt. I can at least say that,” Richt said.
That’s the furthest the coaches have gone in saying Mason will play (and thus burn his redshirt). But it still sounded to my ears like a contingency, rather than an outright plan.

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said it depended on what happened in the game.

“Hutson’s the No. 2. And if the No. 2 goes in it’ll be Hutson Mason,” Bobo said. “You’re preparing to play, you’re No. 2, and if No. 2 goes in the game you gotta be ready. Whether you go in because we put you in or whether you go in because of injury.”

Other notes from Richt’s availability:

- Guard Cordy Glenn, coming off mononucleosis, will be spelled some by reserve A.J. Harmon, according to Richt.

- Bobo said he expects to use as many as six receivers, depending on the health of Logan Gray and Rantavious Wooten. The four that will definitely play are A.J. Green, Kris Durham, Marlon Brown and Israel Troupe.

“I’d say up to six, no more than six,” Bobo said.

- Finally, Richt was also asked about the milestone of starting his 10th year at Georgia.

“I think it’s kinda neat. Ten years is awhile. Ten years went really fast for me. It went really fast. … There’s another part of me that feels like I’ve lived here all my life.”

Go ahead and get Hutson some experience. Very rarely does an SEC quaterback take every snap for an entire season. We need to build some depth at the QB position.
