Ogletree arrest warrant details

Alec Ogletree, a freshman safety on the Georgia football team, was expected to turn himself in later Friday after an arrest warrant was issued for him on a charge of "theft by taking."

The charge stems from a June 15 incident when a member of the Georgia track team reported a $35 motorcycle helmet as stolen from outside the Rankin Smith center.

According to the police report Petr Novotny, a member of the UGA track team from the Czech Republic, reported the helmet being stolen at 10:54 p.m. on June 15. Novotny told police he had left his helmet unsecured on his scooter outside the Rankin Smith building.

"Within the last day or two, the helmet was located and found in the possession of a person who has been identified as Alec Ogletree," said Jimmy Williamson, the chief of UGA Police.

A warrant was issued on Thursday.

"We have had conversations with football officials and they are making arrangements to have him turn himself in around mid-morning,” Williamson said.

Williamson added that Ogletree would probably make bond quickly and be released.

Georgia associate athletics director Claude Felton said head coach Mark Richt was aware of the situation, but did not expect any comment from Richt until the afternoon.

This obviously was not what Georgia wanted to be dealing with, again, a day before its season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette.

The news comes a week after tailback Washaun Ealey became the eighth Georgia football player to be arrested this year. Ealey was picked up on three misdemeanor charges, and has been suspended for a minimum of one game.

Ogletree was one of the few true freshman expected to play in the season opener. The product of Newnan High School is the twin brother of another Bulldog freshman, fullback Alexander "Zander" Ogletree.

Are you kidding...doesn't it cost more than $35 do process the paperwork necessary for this "charge"?

And why did it take 3 months to process the arrest warrant? Timing seems awful suspicious itself.

A $35 helmet stolen by a football player? What other dumbass things can these players get into?

Gee, this is coming out the day before kickoff? How convenient.

Yeah, this is a UGA building? Why would they not tell the player to return the helmet and avoid this mess?

Didn't he think they would catch him when he wore a motorcycle helmet rather than a football helmet to the game? Thank goodness he wasn't driving without a license. Remind me, is he the Good Twin, or the Throw In?

Wait-Alec is a true freshman. Was he even living on campus June 4th?

So sick of this crap. How hard is it to stay out of trouble?!

I love the anonymous posters.
1. The helmet may only cost 35 bucks but it was reported stolen so it should be followed up on.
2. The timing is suspicious but why would a UGA cop release this information the day before a football game. Rather than a conspiracy theory let's focus on the fact that it took over a month for them to find who had the motorcycle helmet.
3. I highly doubt he was planning on wearing the motorcycle helmet on the field. He may not be able to decipher the difference between a football helmet and a motorcycle helmet but I'm sure he could figure out which of these is not like the others. Or a teammate would have told him.

The petty and serious crimes are getting out of hand. This has been an on going trend for years but has gotten worse with the advancement of social media. Things can't get swept under the rug anymore. I'm not sure what more can be done from a coaching stand point. Players have had internal discipline, suspended for games, suspended for a season, and kicked off the team. I don't know what more can be done to get the message across. It's tough to blame Richt, but at the end of the day he is the coach and the buck stops with him.

Receipt of stolen goods? Perhaps this helmet has changed hands several times. Geez.

And just like that, my excitement for tomorrow goes down the crapper. So frustrating.

I don't know why I don't choose a screen name. Maybe its because I am not comfortable with accountability. I like being able to post anything I want.

Look, I'm not trying to excuse stealing, but someone needs to kick the track team members rear end. It should be his teammates. Really? You are going to rat out a fellow athlete at your institution over a $35 helmet?

Someone needs to sit this kid down with Scent of a Woman so he can learn not to be a snitch. Maybe I'm old school, but when I would do stupid things(like filing up 2 liters under my coat at the dining hall) or had stupid things done to me(like having my desk filled up with coffee grinds) in college, I didn't call campus police. Both of those easily were $35 in value.

Is it a inferiority complex with this kid? Football playerism? Because if he called the cops on another track team member over a $35 helmet, I'm sure he be getting his a$$ run all over right now. I hope he does wind sprints till he pukes...and then does them again.

It sounds like the track team member might not have had any idea Ogletree had anything to do with it. Didn't he just report it stolen? He has a right to report it regardless.

What I would like to know is whether the word "prankster" or "retard" or "thief" should be used from now on in this story.
